Cynomorium and Chinese Medicine

With a traditional medicinal culture that extends back thousands of years, Chinese healers have long been using the holistic approach to treat ailments and maladies. One health problem that has been rigorously taken on by Traditional Chinese Medicine for over two millennia is impotence in men. With one billion and counting Mandarin and Cantonese speaking people in this world, it makes you wonder if these ancient healers did not happen to know a thing or two about the subject.

One of the plants that the Chinese have been using for a long time to help treat male impotence, low libido, and erectile dysfunction is a parasitic plant the grows at high altitudes known as Cynomorium Also called suoyang and known scientifically as Cynomorium songaricum, this plant from the high plains of Central Asia is prized by the Chinese for its ability to "lock in the yang". This Yang tonifying ability helps to strengthen the tendons, nourish the blood, treat back pain and, most importantly, treat impotence.

The shape of things

One of the reasons why the Chinese decided to try Cynomorium out was because of its obvious phallic shape. While this is the same reasoning behind the myth of the rhino horn, in this case it appears there may be some truth the plant’s suggestive shape. Aside from looking a bit like a penis, the other characteristic feature of the plant is its reddish brown color. Because the plant got darker on drying, TCM herbalist believed that had potential as a treatment for blood disorders. This observation also turned out to be true. While research is still out on this plant, it is thought that the plant is rich is glycosides, saponins and lignans, giving it the ability to lower blood pressure and improve overall circulation.

Maltese Mushrooms

Cynomorium was first introduced the West in 16th Century by the legendary Knights of Malta. The knights would use the herb as a tonic upon coming back from a battle. It was said that they valued the plant so much that they would send samples of it as a gift to European Monarchs. Soon thereafter, the plant became known as a Maltese Mushroom. While the plant is parasitic like a fungi, thriving off the roots of salt tolerant plants, it is not technically a mushroom. However, the name stuck. On the other side of the Crusader coin, the Arabs also valued this plant for many of the same reasons that the Chinese did and were also said to use it for digestive issues as well. They called the plant tarthuth.

Today, Cynomorium is still being used as a way to help treat ED as well as low blood pressure.
